It’s here that millions of rows and columns quietly run the actual decisions a business makes. Abstract: LLMs have redefined what we expect AI to achieve: natural language, complex reasoning, code synthesis. Given those leaps, it's tempting to assume numerical fluency comes along for free with scale. The reality is more humbling. Even the most advanced LLMs often fail badly at basic tabular prediction. That's a real problem since most of the world's enterprise and scientific data still lives in rows and columns. This talk looks at the gap between a model's linguistic confidence and its actual predictive performance, and asks where our false impression of LLMs' numerical skill comes from.
