Tech Talk: Don't Outsource Your Thinking to AI
Speaker: Lisa Mo Wagner (Lead Product Consultant at Thoughtworks)
Abstract: AI promises to make product teams more productive—faster research synthesis, instant documentation, automated reporting. The efficiency gains are undeniable. But there's a question we're not asking enough: What happens to our craft when we stop doing the hard thinking ourselves?
As an early adopter who pushed the boundaries of AI in my day-to-day work, I discovered something surprising: You can ship faster while losing touch with the nuances that make products great. Tasks get completed more quickly, but the deep understanding that leads to better solutions starts to slip away.
This isn't anti-AI—it's about intentional AI use. Recent neuroscience research shows that cognitive shortcuts come with cognitive costs, and historical patterns from aviation to GPS navigation reveal how easily skills erode when automation handles too much. For product teams, this means we need to think carefully about where AI helps us and where it might be replacing the thinking that actually makes us valuable.
