Tech Talk: Rethinking Database Architecture to Reduce Costs at Enterprise Scale for AI-Driven Workloads
Speaker: Matthew Penaroza (Solutions Engineer at PingCAP)
Abstract: As AI systems move from experimentation to mission-critical deployment, the infrastructure that supports them must evolve—without breaking the budget. Traditional database architectures struggle to keep up with the demands of real-time inference, vector search, and high-throughput pipelines. They're often overprovisioned, siloed, and dependent on expensive, fragmented stacks that drive up costs and complexity.
In this talk, we’ll explore how rethinking database architecture can significantly reduce infrastructure spend while supporting high-scale, latency-sensitive AI workloads. We’ll introduce a next-generation architecture that leverages disaggregated compute and storage—built on top of S3-compatible object stores—to deliver massive elasticity and unified support for OLTP, OLAP, and vector operations. We’ll walk through the design principles that make this model AI-ready: real-time access to transactional and analytical data, native vector support, multi-tenant isolation, and simplified scaling. You'll also hear about the trade-offs and lessons learned in designing systems that serve both developers and models at scale. Attendees will leave with a blueprint for consolidating fragmented systems into a single, cost-optimized database platform that powers modern AI applications—without sacrificing performance, reliability, or control.
