Tech Talk: LLMs and The Path for AGI
Speakers: Eden Cohen (Google)
Abstract: The scaling of parameters, data, and compute has brought Language Models to heights that until recently few considered possible. But with this initial excitement settling, a critical question remains: are LLMs on a viable path towards AGI? This talk will offer a candid assessment of the state of the art in language models. We'll review how scaling laws brought us to where we are, examine the notion of emergent abilities, explore inference-time computation, reconsider how thinking should take place, and confront some critical hurdles ahead. Along the way we might get entangled in a few philosophical questions, but by the end you’ll have a clear idea of the top challenges we’ll need to overcome if we want to achieve AGI.
